The Morgan Silver Dollar
The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most famous coins produced by the United States Mint. First struck in 1878 following passage of the Bland–Allison Act, the coin required the federal government to purchase large quantities of silver mined in the American West.
Named after engraver George T. Morgan, the coin features Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse. Morgan dollars were struck at Philadelphia, Carson City, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Denver.
Although hundreds of millions were minted, many were melted under the Pittman Act of 1918. As a result, certain dates and mintmarks are considerably rarer today.
The Peace Silver Dollar
The Peace Silver Dollar was introduced in 1921 to commemorate the end of World War I. Designed by Anthony de Francisci, the coin features Liberty wearing a radiant crown and an eagle resting peacefully while holding an olive branch.
The series was struck from 1921–1928 and again in 1934–1935. Although shorter than the Morgan series, several issues remain scarce and highly collectible.
The 1964-D Peace Dollar Mystery
One of the most fascinating stories in American numismatics involves the mysterious 1964-D Peace Dollar. Over 300,000 coins were reportedly struck at the Denver Mint but ordered melted before release. If an authentic example were ever discovered, it would instantly become one of the most famous coins in the world.
